Redefining ”New Year’s Resolutions”

It’s New Year’s Day. You are listening to carols with your family, there is an over-decorated Christmas tree in the corner and a bountiful meal in the table. While you are having a mouthful of pie in your mouth, a thought pops into your mind to disturb this abundance of treats and comfort, a little devious thought that often puts you in anguish: “What about New Year’s Resolutions?”

Get good grades. Drop a couple of pounds. Get the perfect tan. Find your special someone. And some more “upgraded”, let’s say: Find your passion. Be who you want to be. Learn something exciting and invigorating. The wish to start the New Year or the new week, depending on how serious you are about your goals, but simultaneously be “realistic”, “practical”, obeying a lame status quo about what people your age should do, is demanding. How can you live the way you want to live and show your true colors while you are told to follow a certain decorum?

The real question is: What are ”New Year’s Resolutions”? And why are we thinking of them in August?

New Year’s Resolutions are about taking control of our lives and do what it is that we really want to do. They are not only about achievements and goals and little pieces of paper that will probably end up in the rubbish. As a different year starts, it’s a chance to rediscover who we are and be happier.

To be honest, this year I forgot about them. I don’t believe that we need an excuse to organize our mind and doing some good introspection. During covid-19, the lockdown, not knowing anything and living in fear, I am guessing that most of the goals that one has set didn’t get achieved. Au contraire, he had to stay inside for months and see what himself is actually like. Being alone gives you a new perspective. You get to see who you really are.

I find that most of the people who made NYR would agree that their plans were postponed. Coronavirus showed us that there is an unknown that even the greatest of minds are not familiar with.

Making resolutions without knowing the future, having some data about what can be done and what can’t be done, is what makes our decisions and hopes fade away. You decide to do something and then new things happen and your decision just doesn’t fit anymore.

That’s why I believe that we should make resolutions whenever we actually feel the need to change. It may be on January, but it may also be on August. We don’t need an excuse to do what we really want, nor an opportunity. We just want will and energy.

Readers, feel free to show the world your true colors. He needs them. Goals, dreams, hopes and ambitions, they are what makes life so interesting. Neither a status quo, nor a bunch of colorful positive posts on the internet during New Year’s Day putting pressure of you to make decisions will affect what you want. Find out what it is that you want in your own time. And if you find it late, it’s okay. Just remember to look out for it. It’s difficult, but it’s worth it. As L. M. Montgomery has written :

“Oh, it’s delightful to have ambitions. I’m so glad I have such a lot. And there never seems to be any end to them– that’s the best of it. Just as soon as you attain to one ambition you see another one glittering higher up still. It does make life so interesting”.
